What Is Required for the Learning Plan?

Frequently Asked Questions on Registration Renewal

The CLPNA’s Continuing Competence Program (CCP) supports Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in achieving and demonstrating competence through the completion of continuing competence activities, which includes both learning and practice in the profession. This article will discuss the learning requirement.

Self-Assessment

Before developing a learning plan, LPNs should engage in self-assessment.

Self-assessment is a crucial part of developing and maintaining continuing competence. It is a process of reflecting on current skills, knowledge, and judgements with the goal of identifying areas that require further learning.

Standards of Practice for LPNs in Canada

Learning plans need to connect to one of the four standards in the Standards of Practice for LPNs in Canada. Each standard has multiple indicators underneath.

VIEW THE STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

The Standards of Practice for LPNs in Canada cover a wide range of practice areas for LPNs, including but not limited to clinical skills, leadership, policy development, fitness to practice, and learning related to regulatory responsibilities.

LPNs will need to be able to describe a connection between their learning and the standard and indicator that they selected. Note that there is not a single right answer. The standards are broad concepts, and the learning selected may fit under more than one.

Learning Plan 2025

LPNs will need to provide information on the continuing competence goals that were completed or will be completed by the end of November. These goals may be the same as the ones indicated at renewal last year, or they may have changed. It is recommended that LPNs report on three goals, with two being the minimum.

Learning Plan 2026

As part of renewal, LPNs will also select the learning that they plan to do in the following registration year. The purpose of creating a learning plan for the year ahead is to engage in self-assessment in advanced and make a plan for continuing competence.
