Registration Renewal Survey
Report from 2025 Renewal
Last year, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who completed their 2025 practice permit renewal were provided the opportunity to complete a survey. This survey supports the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) in identifying improvement areas with the renewal process.
Approximately 1,500 LPNs completed the survey.
LPNs Had Positive Experiences Overall
LPNs who reached out to the CLPNA reported having a positive overall experience with staff, with 75% agreeing that their questions were appropriately addressed.
Experience with the Renewal Form
Respondents generally agreed that the renewal process was straightforward (75% agreed) and easy to navigate (77% agreed).
Experience with Continuing Competence
LPNs are required to report on their continuing competence as part of renewal. Respondents reported understanding the requirements, with 79% reporting understanding the learning plan and 85% understanding what was required for practice hours.
Experience with Obtaining Insurance
99% of LPNs who responded to the survey purchased insurance through the link on the renewal form, with 85% indicating that the process was easy.
Improvements to 2026 Renewal
The renewal period for the 2026 registration year takes place from September 8 to November 30. While overall LPNs reported positive experiences with last year’s renewal process, opportunities for streamlining have been identified.
The CLPNA has made improvements based on feedback received in last year’s survey.
- Ensuring necessary staffing: the CLPNA is expanding staffing to ensure that we continue to provide timely support throughout the renewal process.
- Updating our resources: the website, articles, and other resources related to renewal will be updated to address gaps in understanding reported in the survey.
- Improving our processes: where possible, the CLPNA is addressing process issues with the renewal form to streamline the experience for registrants.
LPNs Reported Positive Perceptions of Regulation
The survey also asked about LPNs’ perceptions of regulation and the CLPNA’s role in public safety. A few highlights are listed below.
- 85% agreed the CLPNA provides the required expertise and knowledge about LPNs.
- 86% agreed the CLPNA regulates in a manner that protects and serves the public.
- 81% agreed that the CLPNA provides practice support and resource that help LPNs understand their practice.
- 92% agree that regulation is important for the public’s confidence in the profession.
