HCA Regulation Coming February 2, 2026

The Government of Alberta recently announced that Health Care Aide (HCA) regulation will come into force on February 2, 2026.

When this regulation comes into effect, HCAs will be regulated health professionals. The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) will become one college regulating two professions: Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides. At that time, the CLPNA will rebrand to the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).

When regulation comes into force, the CLHA will set requirements for HCA practice through the development of standards of practice, policies, and guidelines as well as the administration of a complaints process.

The CLPNA has been working with the Government of Alberta, HCAs, and a broad range of stakeholders from across the province to make the transition to regulation. The CLHA will leverage our experience as a regulator of health professionals to facilitate the transition.

When Regulation Comes into Force

When regulation comes into force on February 2, HCAs who are enrolled on the Directory will be transferred to a register with the CLHA and issued a practice permit. If you want to practice as an HCA when regulation comes into force, make sure you remain enrolled on the Directory up until this date.
